Always pre-wash and/or pretreat fabric before sewing! It’s important to remove any chemical sizing applied during manufacturing, both so it’s safe to handle against delicate skin, and to avoid any residue that may accumulate on your iron. Pre-washing also gives you a better sense of the true drape and handfeel of a fabric, since fabric often feels more crisp and stiff before it’s been washed. As a general rule, we recommend washing and drying fabric in the same way you intend to wash your finished garment. Be sure to separate brights and colours, as some dyes and prints may run the first few times you wash them.
Viscose, rayon and tencel have a tendency to shrink quite a bit, so we suggest washing at least once to remove as much shrinkage before sewing. Wash in cool water on the delicate cycle, and line dry or tumble dry on low. Finished garments should be hand washed with cool water to ensure minimal shrinkage. Use a medium iron when pressing.
