Italian Tiny Check Suiting Deadstock - Black + Grey
This wool deadstock suiting in shades of black and grey is perfect for adding a touch of playfulness into otherwise tailored garments. Those tiny checks-- adorable! Its crisp drape lends itself to more structured applications, while its characteristically wooly hand is cozy without being too heavy thanks to its midweight thickness. We imagine this delightful suiting transformed into blazers, trousers, and skirts galore... maybe even a trenchcoat, for the daring sewist. The sky's the limit! Fully opaque, this wool does not require a lining, but you may want to add one for softness.
Always pretreat fabric before sewing to remove chemical sizing from the manufacturing process. Pre-washing also gives you a better sense of the true drape and handfeel of a fabric. We recommend washing and drying fabric in the same way you intend to wash your finished garment. Be sure to separate brights and colours, as some dyes and prints may run the first few times you wash them.
Wool should never be washed in a machine; the agitation will felt the fibers. Some lightweight wools can be gently hand washed using cool water and gentle detergent like Woolite. To dry, wrap in dry towels and compress to soak up excess moisture before hanging to dry. It’s best to hang over a rack rather than on a line since the weight of wet wool will stretch and distort. Heavier wools like coating should not be washed, but it is very important to remove as much shrinkage as possible before sewing. While it can be taken to the drycleaner for professional steam-shrinking, here’s an easy home hack for less delicate wool. Fill your dryer with damp towels and tumble dry on medium for 20-30 minutes. The steam from the towels will shrink and condition the wool. Use a warm iron with lots of steam when pressing; a press cloth will help prevent "shine" left from a too hot iron.
