There’s chambray, and then there’s this chambray. Woven from yarn-dyed threads with a subtly pronounced weave, this lightweight BCI cotton shirting has been specially softened to feel extraordinary against the skin—like your favourite well-worn shirt from the very first wash. This OEKO-TEX Standard 100–certified fabric drapes gently and breathes beautifully, making it a dream choice for warm-weather dressing. Perfect for summer dresses, breezy button-ups, laid-back sets, and pajamas you’ll never want to change out of. The weave gives it texture and dimension, while the soft finish adds a touch of everyday luxury. Almost fully opaque, though you may want to line it for full opacity, depending on your project.
This fabric was woven using BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) certified cotton which is produced by farmers who minimize pesticide use and other harmful farming practices, use water efficiently, care for the health of the soil, conserve natural habitats and provide good working conditions and fair pay. The finished fabric is Oeko-Tek 100 certified, ensuring it is free of harmful chemicals, dyes and finishes, and the mill where it is produced follows stringent environmental and water management practices.

Wash
Always pretreat fabric before sewing to remove chemical sizing from the manufacturing process. Pre-washing also gives you a better sense of the true drape and handfeel of a fabric. We recommend washing and drying fabric in the same way you intend to wash your finished garment. Be sure to separate brights and colours, as some dyes and prints may run the first few times you wash them.
Long-Term Care
It’s important to wash and dry cotton to remove any potential shrinkage down the road. Machine wash in warm water and tumble dry on medium or hot. More delicate cottons like voile, double gauze or embroidered cottons should be washed by hand or on the delicate cycle.
Fabric Tips
Use a hot iron when pressing.

I have come to learn that fabric descriptions which read "not fully opaque" or "may need a lining" are actually a warning that a 75 GSM Bemberg lining is actually mandatory. I was pleased with the appearance and soft feel of this softened striped shirting. However, I saw as soon as I opened the package that even a Bemberg lining would leave the fabric too see-through to use for a dress bodice or skirt. Fortunately, I found a very dense 135 GSM viscose lining that makes an opaque combination. I would love if this design were available in a weave of 190 GSM or more.
I made a classic button down shirt with long sleeves. Fabric was very easy to work with. Shirt sewed up beautifully. Always happy with Core Fabrics!
