How to Care for Knit Fabrics

Washing Instructions

To preserve the softness and stretch of Core Fabrics’ knit fabrics, it’s best to wash knit clothing by hand in cool water using a mild detergent. If machine washing, use a gentle cycle with cold water and place knits inside a mesh laundry bag to protect them from snagging or stretching. Avoid harsh detergents, bleach, and fabric softeners, and always turn knit clothing inside out before washing.

Tips for Longevity

To take care of your fabric, after washing, avoid wringing or twisting knits; instead, gently squeeze out excess water and lay the fabric flat on a clean towel to air dry away from direct sunlight. High heat can weaken fibres and cause shrinkage or distortion. To maintain shape and colour, minimize washing frequency, avoid tumble drying, and store knits folded rather than hanging. Promptly mend any snags or pulls to extend the life of your garment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Knit Fabric

How is knit fabric made?

Knit fabric is made by looping yarns together to create a stretchy, pliable textile. Common fibres include organic cotton, bamboo viscose, wool, spandex for stretch, and polyester or nylon blends. These fibres can be used alone or blended to achieve different textures, softness, stretch and durability.

How is knit fabric different from woven fabric?

Unlike woven fabric, which is made by interlacing yarns at right angles, knit fabric is made by looping yarns continuously. This looped construction gives knit fabric natural stretch and flexibility, making it more comfortable and form-fitting than woven fabrics, which have little or no mechanical stretch.

Does knit fabric shrink after washing?

Knit fabric can shrink if washed or dried with heat, especially if made from natural fibres like cotton. To minimize shrinkage, wash knits in cool water on a gentle cycle or by hand, and air dry flat away from heat sources. Pre-washed knits, like many offered by Core Fabrics, are less prone to shrinking.
