Make the warmest coat ever with this eco-friendly alternative to Thinsulate! This recycled wool and poly interlining is fluffy, soft, and unbeatably warm. Made from pre-consumer recycled wool yarn and recycled polyester, it has all the insulation you'd expect from a natural fibre coupled with the durability of poly. It's ideal for use as a low-loft batting for quilts and quilted jackets, or as a sew-in interlining sandwiched between outer and lining fabrics for sneaky but mighty warmth (see a helpful tutorial on how to do that here). We've been trying hard not to take naps on it in our studio – we hope you can resist the urge with your yardage! Now available in two weights.

Care Instructions

Wash

Always pretreat fabric before sewing to remove chemical sizing from the manufacturing process. This gives you a better sense of the true drape and handfeel of a fabric. We recommend caring for your fabric in the same way you intend to care your finished garment.
Heavier wools like coating should not be washed, but it is very important to remove as much shrinkage as possible before sewing. While it can be taken to the drycleaner for professional steam-shrinking, here’s an easy home hack for less delicate wool. Fill your dryer with damp towels and tumble dry on medium for 20-30 minutes. The steam from the towels will shrink and condition the wool. Use a warm iron with lots of steam when pressing; a press cloth will help prevent 'shine' left from a too hot iron.

Long-Term Care

Hang finished coat in between uses in an area with good air flow. Spot clean when stains occur making sure not to rub. Store in a garment bag in between seasons.

Fabric Tips

When interfacing wool, use a press cloth to apply as it protects your wool from overpressing and your iron from melted adhesive. When possible use 'weft' interfacing. Knit interfacing also works in a pinch.

Winter coats all day long!

With some new college students in my family attending school in northern states, I'm doing a big winter coat project. This recycled wool interlining is light, warm, and not too fussy to work with. (Run the edges through your serger with the batting side down to bind them up nicely.) I've already got other members of the family eyeballing the coats and wondering if it will be their turn next, so I'm sure I'll be back for more!
