We're deeply proud to offer this beautiful, artisanally produced textile. Made from eri silk and spun and loomed by a woman-owned and operated co-op located in India, this gorgeous fabric has a distinct twill weave and comes in a rainbow of soft pastel shades. Unlike traditional silk, eri silk (also known as "peace silk") is harvested _after _the silk worms have woven their cocoon. The moths are not harmed in the process and fly away when their cocoon is complete. As a result, eri fibres aren't a continuous length, which results in a slubby yet soft texture, loaded with character and dimension. Midweight with a soft drape, it's exceptional thermoregulation properties will keep you cool in summer, warm in the winter, and swaddled in this very special silk all year long. We suggest it for button-down shirts, blouses, flowy dresses and loose-fitting trousers. Fully opaque, it does not require a lining.

Ethically Produced Peace Silk

Our supplier focuses on ethical consumption, with fibres and fabric woven by fairly paid weavers and artisans in India. This particular fabric was made from the abandoned cocoons of Eri Silkworms, meaning it is cruelty-free and requires less water to produce than other silk yarns. Only natural and azo-free dyes are used in its production.

Care Instructions

Always pretreat fabric before sewing to remove chemical sizing from the manufacturing process. Pre-washing also gives you a better sense of the true drape and handfeel of a fabric. We recommend washing and drying fabric in the same way you intend to wash your finished garment. Be sure to separate brights and colours, as some dyes and prints may run the first few times you wash them.

Long-Term Care

It’s always safest to dryclean silk, but it is possible to wash at home with care. Since silk is a protein fibre, it’s wise to think about it like washing your hair - gently! Silk may bleed more than other fibres; test an inconspicuous area in cool water. Wash separately if the dye bleeds. If it's a print, it may be safer to dry clean. To wash by hand, soak in cool water with gentle laundry detergent like Eucalan or Soak for 30 minutes, occasionally agitating by hand. Rinse well and gently squeeze the water out (never wring!) To wash by machine, use the delicate cycle and a gentle laundry detergent. Remove immediately and hang to dry to prevent wrinkles, ensuring it’s hanging straight and not stretching or distorting along the grain.

Fabric Tips

Use a warm iron to press; a press cloth will help prevent 'shine' left from a too hot iron. Silk tends to be a bit shifty so use an extra sharp pair of shears or rotary cutter and pattern weights to cut your fabric.

Beautiful, versatile, beginner friendly

I used it to make a princess seam dress with a half circle skirt. The fabric is both crisp and drapey, so it makes it very versatile. I was worried it would only work for shirts because of how crisp it is, but I found out that it's the kind of fabric that will work for almost any project! The princess seams pressed beautifully (the fabric feels almost starchy when you iron it with steam, that helps), and the skirt draped just as beautifully. It's a very beginner friendly fabric, except it's maybe too expensive for a complete beginner! I would definitely want to purchase more of it for the next project, so hopefully it goes on sale sometime!
