Nothing says summer elegance quite as well as a dramatic caftan. Charlie is a fresh take on this warm weather staple.

All versions feature a deep V neckline, short dolman sleeves, inset center panel and roomy pockets. View A is modern and architectural with striking pleats beneath the bust. For a softer, more romantic dress, Views B & C feature a gently gathered bodice with an optional waist tie for a figure-skimming silhouette in two skirt lengths. You may also choose between a dramatically wide sleeve or one slightly higher cut for more coverage.

Sizes: 0-20 (print and PDF) and 14-32 (PDF)

Recommended fabric

  • Light to medium weight wovens such as linen, chambray, tencel, linen, silk, chiffon, rayon challis, crepe de chine, batiste and voile.

better for people with narrow hips?

My friend and I both made this, and found it was too narrow in the hips. Part of the issue is that the pockets add so much bulk to that area! If you have larger hip/butt then consider grading the sizing. The design is really strait all the way down, so for some of us this doesn't work, and an A-line might fit better. Ugh, I'm going to try to use some of this fabric for something else, as this is unwearable.

Hi Kim,
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We're truly sorry to hear that the fit didn't work out as expected for you and your friend.
We understand how frustrating it can be when a garment doesn't fit as hoped. May I ask if you had a chance to review our size chart before cutting? We always recommend comparing your measurements carefully to the chart and grading between sizes if needed, especially around the hip area where fit is crucial.
Also, fabric choice can significantly impact both the drape and how bulky pockets appear. Some fabrics work much better than others with this design - the right fabric weight and drape can make a huge difference in how the pockets lay and how the overall garment fits.
We'd love to help troubleshoot if you're interested in trying again, but we completely understand if you prefer to use the fabric for another project instead.
Thank you for your feedback - it helps us provide better guidance to our customers.
Best regards,

Summer style

I've been wanting to buy this patterns for a few months and couldn't justify it until the heat of summer hit and I needed something comfortable for hot days. The front panel was a bit of a challenge but I did it and am very happy with the results. Another great core pattern!

I've made the Charlie caftan twice since I received the pattern. Both dresses are gorgeous and comfortable, especially on a hot day. I will be making more.

First big project

I’m a new sewist, and I’ve picked this pattern for my first big project. I’m doing it in a take your own pattern and material class, so I’m confident it will come out well. Once I’ve made it once, it will be a piece of cake!
