Natural dyes derived from plants are a much more eco-friendly way to add some colour into your life! One of the most historically common varieties is indigo, made from the leaves of the indigo shrub. This dreamy handloomed cotton broadcloth uses traditional indigo and resist dyeing techniques to deliver a symphony of blue shades. Crisp and light with a super soft hand, this fabric features a resist-dyed windowpane check motif that is delightfully irregular - we love that you can feel the hand of the maker! Produced by a weaver and dyer co-op in India, it's a fabric we're extremely proud to offer! We see it used for semi-structured garments like camp-collar shirts, sundresses, paper-bag waisted shorts, and the like. Nearly fully opaque, it should not require a lining for most products.

Note: As a result of the indigo dye, you may find this fabric bleeds the first few times you wash it. Be sure to wash with like colours in cold water to minimize dye transfer. You can also add a cup or so of white vinegar to the wash water to further prevent dye bleeding.

Care Instructions

Wash

Always pretreat fabric before sewing to remove chemical sizing from the manufacturing process. Pre-washing also gives you a better sense of the true drape and handfeel of a fabric. We recommend washing and drying fabric in the same way you intend to wash your finished garment. Be sure to separate brights and colours, as some dyes and prints may run the first few times you wash them. You can add half a cup to one cup of vinegar to the final rinse cycle to help set the colours and minimize bleeding. It’s important to wash and dry cotton to remove any potential shrinkage down the road.

Fabric Tips

You can use a hot iron when pressing cotton. You can use sharp point universal needles to sew your projects. We recommend starting your project with a brand new needle.

Soft cotton

I am using this to make a Grainline Tamarack jacket and so far so good. I like the natural texture and print of this fabric. I pre-washed it and it washed very well, with little creasing, which surprised me but just goes to show the quality of this indigo fabric.

Handcrafted beauty

I purchased 4 of these handcrafted batiks to combine in a shirt. The dot and wave fabric is the lightest weight, then the chevron, the leaf is a little heavier. They were all easy to work with, perfect to combine for a summer shirt, and best of all you can clearly see the handcrafted quality of the fabric.

I just love my indigo handblocked fabric and am just about to sew it up into a cool summer dress.
